India Invites President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to G20 Summit

The government of India has invited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the G20 summit.

The G20 summit comes up in India between September 9 and 10, 2023.

India is hosting the G20 presidency in 2023.

The G20 brings together the world’s major and systemically important economies. Its members represent 85% of global GDP, 75% of international trade and two-thirds of the word's population.

The forum meets every year since its inception in 1999 after the Global Financial Crisis of 1997-98, with leaders meeting for an annual G20 Leaders’ Summit since 2008.

In addition to the summit, there are ministerial meetings, Sherpa meetings, working groups and special events organised throughout the year.

The members of the G20 are: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.

Each year, the presidency invites guest countries to participate. Spain is invited as a permanent guest.

Speaking on the plan to have President Tinubu attend the summit, the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Amb. Shri G. Balasubramanian, said channels of communication had already been opened between both countries towards President Tinubu’s participation.

The envoy also hailed Nigeria’s participation in the over 140 various meetings that have been held so far, saying it had been very satisfactory.
