Annually, thousands of people sit for the IELTS but sadly only a few of the IELTS candidates are able to meet the band score needed for the exams. Also, be duly informed that IELTS Certificates can only be valid for a period of two years.

IELTS is divided into two Academic IELTS and General IELTS. Academic IELTS is mainly for applicants who want to pursue their studies abroad while General IELTS is for applicants who want to migrate from their home country to abroad for employment or job search.

Academic IELTS is further subdivided into three parts: Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Primarily, this article will buttress on the writing part of the academic IELTS.

For the IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: you will be shown a visual representation of information; a graph, table, chart, process, or map, and you are asked to summarise, describe, or explain the information you see.

Academic IELTS Writing Task 1 Guidelines

  • INTRODUCTION

You must introduce your charts, graphs, maps, diagrams, and processes to your readers by paraphrasing the topic in your own words in one or two sentences.

  • OVERVIEW

Give an overview of the task describing the general trend and features of the task.

NOTE: You should always start your overview with the word ''Overall.''

  • THE BODY OF THE TASK OR PASSAGE

In this part, you are to divide the body of the task or the passage into two features: i.e. passage one and passage two.

Academic IELTS Writing Task 1 Essential Information

  • Candidates writing the Academic IELTS Writing Task 1 will write a report on a data set, map, or process. People doing General Training will write a letter.
  • Candidates must write 150 words or more.
  • Candidates should spend around 20 minutes on this part of the test.
  • Task 1 is worth 1/3 of your total mark on the Writing test.
  • You will be assessed in four areas: Task Achievement (25%) Coherence and Cohesion (25%) Lexical Resource (25%) Grammatical Range and Accuracy (25%)
  • The most important thing is that you can demonstrate that you can clearly communicate in English.
  • The key to doing well is to know exactly what the examiners want and give it to them.
