NUC,ASUU clash over new curriculum

The NUC and ASUU are at odds over the revised Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) for universities. ASUU criticized the CCMAS, calling it a nightmarish model of curriculum reengineering and an aberration to the Nigerian University System, while the NUC defended the review process. The NUC clarified that all stakeholders were involved in the CCMAS review and emphasized its alignment with the Education Act. The CCMAS expands on the previous Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) and involves academic experts, professional bodies, and the private sector. The NUC stated that the CCMAS would constitute 70% of the curriculum, with universities having autonomy over the remaining 30%. ASUU President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, opposed the CCMAS, claiming it was imposed without adequate consultation. The NUC countered that it engaged Nigerian universities throughout the review process and highlighted the benefits of program specialization and the flexibility for universities to exceed the minimum requirements. ASUU argued for a bottom-up approach to curriculum review, allowing universities to propose innovations. The NUC reaffirmed its adherence to its mandated role and stressed the recognition and support it received from various stakeholders. The conflicting views reflect the ongoing debates surrounding curriculum standards and the need to balance national guidelines with institutional autonomy.
